RE-LAUNCH OF THE TRENCHARD MUSEUM WEBSITE
By Clive Brooks 93rd
The Trenchard Museum goes Virtual
The Old Haltonians Website – www.oldhaltonians.co.uk – has for a number of years carried a Menu Tab which hinted that a visit to the Trenchard Museum through the wonders of the Internet was in prospect. Indeed, when the tab was first introduced there were pages to be viewed but, unfortunately, the producer of this section of the Website moved on to pastures new and any on-going support was lost which resulted in only an apologetic note to be viewed whenever the tab was clicked.
As the latest member of the Achieve team I succumbed to some gentle persuasion from our Archivist, to produce a completely new website for the museum to include the James McCudden Flight Heritage Centre and the Archives. And where possible to include virtual tours of these venues. Over the last few months I have completed the first stage of the project and happily can announce that the site is now open and I invite you to see for yourselves what I hope will prove to be a massive improvement on anything we have had previously. Call up www.oldhaltonians.co.uk and click on the Museum tab. Here you will see not only completely new pages but you can also treat yourselves to a virtual tour of the Trenchard Museum . I intend to start work on the JMFHC and the Archives in the coming months. I hope eventually to introduce more interactive facilities, always a great favourite with the thousands of young people who now visit the historical sites at Halton annually.
A few notes on the virtual tour; the tour assumes the path that a “real” visitor would take and gently points out various salient points and items of particular interest as one follows the arrows on the floor. Some of the pictures have red dots (as per the accompanying picture) which when clicked provides a pop-up giving further details of the exhibit in question. Other pages provide a slide show of the area or, in some cases, a video that gives personal accounts provided by brats themselves. Some of these features are still in course of being introduced but ultimately
all pages will be populated with one of these enhancements and, hopefully, will induce in the viewer an overwhelming urge to come and visit the museum itself!
This work is being carried out on a voluntary basis by the Webmaster of the Old Haltonian, Clive Brooks (93rd) and is an addition to his portfolio of Websites that he has produced over the years which include both commercial sites (i.e. for pay!) and others such as the Old Haltonians site which are done for love. In addition Clive is a prolific producer of Aviation Art and over the past 40+ years his work has been produced on commission for Messes, HQs, and Presentations; a highlight of his artistic career was to have a work auctioned at Sotherby’s in 1994. Some of his masterpieces can be seen at www.cb-art&>mail.com Clive also is in the throes of updating our Roll of Honour and awards for gallantry. These can also be seen on our website. We intend to add a section on State awards such as BEMs OBEs etc. Those of you who have been so honoured please let us know at trenchard6?(a)btinternet.com with details and date of your award . Please send in any awards to brats who have taken their last postings if you know of any. ET
